Information from the above link will include how to obtain forms to inform airlines about incapacity and illness (usually downloadable from the airline website, how to obtain seats at reduced rates if you are accompanying a person with illness or disability, and services you can arrange to support your journey.  It is important that you establish at what point the airline relinquishes responsibility and the airport teams take over

CONISTON WHEELCHAIR TRAIL

A Wheelchair friendly path now runs from the village to Coniston Boating Centre, and includes a new steel bridge over Church Beck.  Hopes are high that the trails will be extended linking the boating centre with other parts of Coniston

FAMILY AND CARERS TRUST

This charity has two caravans - located on Haven holiday parks in Somerset and Yorkshire - which they let to people with disabilities and Carers free of charge for holidays. English run converted Cotton Mill offering fully accessible holidays.  English speaking support workers available.  Accessible minibus available

 

LOWTHWAITE LODGE, PENRITH CUMBRIA - Accessible Luxury Self-Catering Holidays for Carers.  This Lodge was donated to Age Concern in a legacy, the lady who lived there wanted to leave her home to be used by people in a caring role.  The fully accessible lodge sleeps up to 4 people in two bedrooms, one en-suite double and one twin.  There is a family bathroom with walk in shower.  Call Age Concern Eden, 01768 863618 for quotes (the price is for the hire of the Lodge, not per person).  In 2009 the price range was  £ 125 to £ 400 for 7 nights, but the Lodge may be available for short breaks of 2 nights or more.

This farm with converted buildings has been recommended to us by a Carer who's son has learning disabilities, and who enjoyed a holiday at this location with his Care Workers.  It offers ground floor, wheelchair friendly accommodation, fully equipped.  It is located at Out Rawcliffe, near Blackpool

SECTION THREE - FUNDING ASSISTANCE FOR BREAKS AND HOLIDAYS

 

The British Legion has 4 of their own Welfare Break Centres around the country which are for service or ex service personnel who maybe recovering from illness , hospitalisation or bereavement and need a break away. SSAFA www.ssafa.org.uk will look to provide funding to cover the costs of holiday breaks subject to circumstances.  You can also contact the local branch by phone, 01744 22774 or email at merseyside@ssafa.org.uk

 

Frederick Andrew Convalescence Trust (FACT) provides women with financial assistance during times of convalescence, offering grants of up to £1000 to those of all ages, from all backgrounds and with almost any medical condition. Victoria Convalescent Trust awards grants for convalescence and periods of recuperative and respite care for those in need that do not have the financial resources to fund this and have been unable to obtain assistance from the statutory services. Applications for grants are only accepted from referring agencies such as Health, Education and Social Services, though never from a potential beneficiary. The Margaret Champney Rest and Holiday Fund assist carers in having a break away from the person to whom care is normally provided. In exceptional circumstances, assistance may be provided where the carer and cared for wish to holiday together, if they are for instance married or partners or an adult or child caring for an aged parent or vice versa. Applications must come from a social worker or similar staff and must be made in writing, though initial contact by telephone is recommended. Family Fund is a government funded organisation helping low income families caring for a seriously ill or disabled child under the age of 16, offering a range of grants including help with holidays.
