Carers Emergency Card

The Carers Emergency Card gives you as a Carer peace of mind knowing that in the event of an emergency, an agreed plan would be put into action.
 

For example, if you were out shopping and your car broke down, or worse, you had an accident, you or the emergency services would activate the card by calling the telephone number on it; from then on your action plan for the person you care for would come into
operation.

The Carers Emergency Card is a scheme giving Carers peace of mind 24 hours a day, reducing their anxiety about leaving the person they care for alone for any length of time.

The Scheme is a joint venture between St Helens Carers Centre and St Helens Council and is available free to any Carer who lives in St Helens, or for those who care for someone living in the borough.

The card is the same size as a credit card that will identify you as a Carer. No personal information is on it, just a reference number unique to you.

Before you are given the Carers Emergency Card, you will have discussed and agreed with the Carers Centre your Action Plan which we will use in the event of an emergency. For example, you may wish to nominate two relatives, neighbours or friends who could be contacted in the event you were delayed or involved in an emergency.

When anyone telephones the number on the card and quotes the personal reference number, your agreed action plan would be activated, for example, it may be that we call your relative you have named in your plan ensuring the person you care for is not left alone.

You will be issued a Carers Emergency Card with your unique identity number on it. You should carry the card with you at all times. We will also send you a special Carers Emergency Key Ring and, if you drive, a sticker to display in your car.

We can also issue a green Carers Emergency Card to the person you care for and in the event they are in an emergency, you would be notified. This has been particularly useful for those caring for someone with memory problems, learning difficulties and mental ill health.
