Long Term Planning & Life Books

Nobody knows what the future will bring, but for some Carers there are situations they would like to be prepared for. The disability or illness of the person you car for may change over time. Do not assume that professionals will always realise the impact of this on your caring role, you need to ask for reassessments of medical or social support.

Likewise, these changes may impact on benefits and other services, and you need to keep these under review. The team at the Carer’s Centre will provide assistance to meet any needs you may have in this area. You may also find that you need emotional support to think about the future.

Do you need to consider the long term housing, financial and care support which may be required should you no longer be able to care. Also, if the person you care for has to move into long term care, you may require a lot of emotional support to come to terms with the changes in your life. This is also relevant when caring comes to an end because of the loss of the person you care for.

We also provide a "Life Story Book" service.  This is a long term planning tool, mainly but no exclusively used for older parents caring for an adult son or daughter with a learning or physical disability.  The life story book builds up a complete picture of the Carers' son or daughters life so that there is a record of the things important to them.  Our Support Officer Angela Davies can give you more details and discuss whether this service may be appropriate for you and the person you care for.

If you feel you would like to discuss any of the issues raised the Carer Support team is available by telephone or by dropping into the Centre. They will listen, and allow you time to explore your feelings in a safe, non judgmental setting.
